Baby’s First SoulCycle Class

In my never ending quest to find workout classes I actually enjoy, I decided to jump on the bandwagon and try SoulCycle. I went in with an honest opinion and tried not to read any spoilers about what to expect in the class before hand. And well… here is what happened and what I learned.

When you get there you have to sign in.
-At SoulCycle, you initial next to your name on a list when you arrive. I’m used to checking in with the staff and getting anything I need for class. (You do need to ask them for shoes though, which are free for your first class!)

I had to ask a staff member to help me with my bike.
-They did say in the beginning of class to call out to the instructor if you were new and needed help but there were a few new people so I was happy to have someone spend time with me and really get me all set up.

-I’ve only taken a spin class once before with a friend and she helped me with my bike, so I won’t lie I had literally no idea (and still don’t) how to get my bike set up.

I sat in the back.
-Being nervous about it being my first time, I sat in the back. But I actually think this was a mistake. Trust me i’m not saying sit in the front row but I would say if I could do my first class over, I would sit in the middle rows. This way its easier for you to see the instructor but don’t feel like your on display.

I did get a little intimidated.
-Watching the riders in the front row was a good thing and a bad thing for me. I loved seeing how they did all the moves while riding, but they also made me realize how uncoordinated I felt/was. Theres a ton of push up and stand up movements on the bike in the class, more then you would think. And it was hard for me not to be a little embarrassed. But I reminded myself it was my first time and over time I would get better.

I drank the Kool-Aid.
-I have always heard mixed reviews about how the section of the class where it gets even darker, the candles are lit and the instructor gets all emotional on you. But personally, I loved it. I like motivating speeches. It didn’t annoy me but actually motivated me more. I could see how it would annoy people but for me, it helped me keep going when I felt burnt out.

Would I go back?
-I think so! It’s expensive, but you can get a deal on a three class pack after you take your first class. But, I think I would like to do it with a friend who has cycled before. It would be nice to have them help me with my bike and be able to ask any questions.

Did I enjoy it?
-Overall, yes I did enjoy the class but not as much as I thought I would have. I ended up hitting my knee on the bike pretty bad in the beginning of class and it really hurt the whole time. Which made it hard. But I like how friendly the staff and the other class goers were to me and how it felt like they really wanted to help you have a great class.

I hope this helped anyone looking to try SoulCycle! And as always I am continuing my quest to find workout classes I love and enjoy going to. Comment here and let me know any you love and think I should try!
